Teasers and other promotional material from major and indie studios all point to 2020 being a big year for gaming. All sorts of exciting releases are planned for the year, but we have finally managed to pick the video games we cannot wait to play.
There are many more titles that we are excited about, and we are sure we will have the chance to show them some love during the year. For now, however, the highly anticipated games that we are going to explore coincidentally are all sequels or follow-ups to titles we have thoroughly enjoyed in the past.
Doom Eternal – Xbox One, PS4, PC
Who would have thought when the first Doom game made its debut in 1993, that gamers would still be getting excited about the series in 2020? Reportedly due for release in March, Doom Eternal picks up where the 2016 reboot left off.
The difference is that the space marine we can control in the first-person shooter boasts a few exciting enhancements. One of them is a grappling hook that offers faster manoeuvring. The others are a BFG cannon from which the character can be fired, and a suit fitted with special blades. That is all set to get a whole lot more exciting in a multiplayer mode that will see the marine face a horde of demons.
Spelunky 2 – PS4
New randomly generated adventures are in the offing with the roguelike run-and-jump platform video game, Spelunky 2. The sequel to the 2008 release probably will not be the next big title for eSports betting in New Zealand, but it does look like it is going to offer a great challenge.
Spelunky 2 will see Ana, the daughter of the original character, descend into the mysterious caverns on the moon. Each level is generated randomly; something that happens every time you die. Another feature is the bombs that the character can use to create their own paths.
Hollow Knight Silksong – Windows, Nintendo Switch, Linux, macOS
Developed by Team Cherry as a sequel to a 2017 release, Hollow Knight Silksong is a Metroidvania title that focuses on Hornet’s journey through the huge, haunted kingdom of Pharloom.
The creatures that haunt the kingdom are bugs that Hornet must use a needle to defeat. The character will also meet friendly characters and they will need to complete various quests.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps – Xbox One, PC
Moon Studios’ Ori and the Will of the Wisps is going to be one of 2020’s biggest releases for Xbox One and Windows 10. The long-awaited sequel to 2015’s Ori and the Blind Forest will once again let us direct the movements of the white guardian spirit title character.
This time, the game will take us out of the forest of Nibel. There, in a world of unlockable areas, we must try to discover the lost ones’ secrets as well as the guardian spirit’s destiny. The Metroidvania game will require us to move from platform to platform, and to use our puzzle-solving skills.
